How To

Your tax invoice is a Word precedent using a document type. It ensures that all the required information including your letterhead and contact details is used whenever a Word tax invoice is generated. LEAP refers to this as the Tax Invoice document type.

Make sure that you have set up a Body bookmark to display the invoice layout information. For more information, view our article on Creating a New Document Type.

Modifying Word Tax Invoices

Follow these steps to update your Wordbill invoice template:

Open the matter.
Make sure you're on the Details & Correspondence tab.
Click Forms & Precedents.

The Forms & Precedents will open in a new window.
Make sure you're on the Browse tab. You can then set the Filter drop-down list to Wordbill to ensure that only wordbills appear in the list.
Navigate to Practice Management > Accounting > Accounting folder on the left-hand side.

Alternatively, you may search for your Wordbill precedent using the Search precedents field.
Right-click the Wordbill precedent and select Edit Precedent.

The Wordbill precedent will open in Microsoft Word.
Make the required adjustments as needed, such as updating the letterhead.
Click Save & Close and provide Reason for Change.

Inserting Fields and Tables

To insert fields and tables in the LEAP Wordbill template, follow these instructions:

Open the matter.
Make sure you're on the Details & Correspondence tab.
Click Forms & Precedents.

The Forms & Precedents will open in a new window.
Make sure you're on the Browse tab. You can then set the Filter drop-down list to Wordbill to ensure that only wordbills appear in the list.
Navigate to Practice Management > Accounting > Accounting folder on the left-hand side.

Alternatively, you may search for your Wordbill precedent using the Search precedents field.
Right-click the Wordbill precedent and select Edit Precedent.

The Wordbill precedent will open in Microsoft Word.
From the LEAP ribbon, click Insert in Wordbill section.

The LEAP Wordbill Fields window will appear on the right-hand side of the document.
Select from the list of available Tables and Fields.
Place the cursor in the precedent where you wish to insert the field and click to position it.
Choose a field (for example, Invoice Number or Person Acting) and click 'Insert'
Click Save & Close and provide Reason for Change.

Fields within the document may generate as "Sample Data" if a synchronisation issue occurs with the template. If this happens, try inserting the fields and tables again.

Inserting Section Information

Open the matter and make sure you're on the Details & Correspondence tab.
Click Forms & Precedents.

The Forms & Precedents will open in a new window.
From the Browse tab, search for your Wordbill precedent using the Search precedents field. You can set the Filter drop-down list to Wordbill to ensure that only wordbills appear in the list.
Right-click the Wordbill precedent and select Edit Precedent.

The Wordbill precedent will open in Microsoft Word.
From the LEAP ribbon, click Insert in Wordbill section.

The LEAP Wordbill Fields window will appear on the right-hand side of the document.
Place the cursor in the precedent where you wish to insert the field and click to position it.
Select Section Information.
Click Insert.

The Insert Section Information will open in a new window.
Enter the Section Name (as per your Invoice's Group Name).

Click to edit heading

Ensure the Section Name is entered correctly as a misspelling will result in empty fields.

Select a Field from the drop-down list.
Click Insert.
Click Save & Close and provide Reason for Change.

Formatting Styles

Word Tax Invoices use Word Styles for the text within the body of the Word Tax Invoice, and also for the invoice layout i.e. the Professional Fees and Disbursements tables, including:

Text size, font and colour
Borders and shading

By default, LEAP uses the Normal style for all document types. To edit a style:

With the Wordbill precedent opened in Modify Mode, click the Home tab.
Find and right-click the Normal style in Styles section.
Select Modify.

The Modify Style will open in a new window.
Select the font, font size, colour and other formatting for the Normal style.
Click OK.

Formatting Borders and Shading

The Professional Fees and Disbursements tables have borders and shading set up by default. The tables use Table styles. To make changes, follow the steps below:

Select the Default Invoice table.
Click the Table Design tab.
Click the second drop-down arrow to expand the Table Styles list.

Click to edit heading

By default, LEAP uses the LEAPWordbill Table Style.

Click Modify Table Style.

The Modify Style will open in a new window.
Select the area of the table you wish to format e.g. Whole table or Header row from the Apply formatting to drop-down list.
Make the necessary changes for the border and shading.
Click OK.
