How To

Chronology is currently optimised for medical chronologies for personal injury matters. As development continues, support will expand to additional chronology types and areas of law.

Chronology is an AI-powered application that automatically builds a timeline of events from the documents saved to your matter. Instead of manually reading through hundreds of documents, the AI extracts, dates, and organises every significant event into a structured, sortable chronology.

The result is a working chronology that you control. Every entry is linked to its source document and assigned an Importance and Case Impact rating. You can edit, accept or delete entries before exporting the chronology to Word or PDF and saving it to the matter.

Features

Interactability and filterability: Sort and filter entries by date, document type, importance, impact, and date range. This helps you focus on the events that matter for your case.
Choose what matters: Select only the documents and folders relevant to the chronology.
Consistency through repeatability: Entries that have been accepted or edited are kept in this state in future generations of the chronology.
Final say: Decide which entries remain and how to word them.
Export: Save the chronology to the matter for printing and markup.

Accessing Chronology

From your LEAP Matter list, click LEAP Menu > Marketplace.
Search for Chronology using the search bar.
Click Enable in the top-right corner.

Click to edit heading

The Chronology app should now appear in the LEAP Ribbon for your Personal Injury Matter types.

The Chronology Workspace

When you open Chronology from a matter, the screen is divided into distinct areas:

Chronology History

This shows all chronologies generated on the matter. You can switch between them, rename them, or delete earlier versions.

This is useful when you add new documents and regenerate. Earlier versions are kept so you can compare what changed. This side panel can also be collapsed.

Creating New Chronologies

You can click New Chronology to generate a new chronology. A new window will open, allowing you to manually select which documents and folders to include in this new chronology, or you can let AI decide for you.

The Chronology Table

This is a sortable, filterable table listing every event the AI has identified. Each row is one event with rows that are expandable to show more detail.

Chronology Overview

This is a snapshot of the current chronology showing total entries, positive and negative impacts, and high-importance entries, with the top three entries displayed here. You can also find a list of documents referenced in this chronology.

The chronology table: Understanding the columns

Each row represents one event.

The columns are:

Date	The date the event occurred, with a time as well if applicable. You can sort chronologically by clicking the column header.
Event Description	A brief, high-level summary of the event written by the AI. Click the expand arrow on the left to see the full description.
Document	The source document name and page range, shown as a hyperlink. Click to open the document in the previewer at the referenced page. You can sort alphabetically by document name. Each entry will only have one source.
Type	The category of the document or event – Medical Record, Imaging, Consultation, Report, etc. This is a fixed list determined by the AI based on the source document and cannot be edited. Sort alphabetically.
Provider	The organisation or person the document is from. This is linked to the source document and populated automatically.
Importance	The AI's assessment of how significant the event is to the chronology. Shown as a colour-coded flag: High, Medium and Low.
Case Impact	The AI's assessment of whether the event supports or undermines your position. Shown as a coloured icon: Positive, Negative and Neutral.
Accepted	An entry can be marked as Accepted when you are satisfied with its contents. Entries that you accept or edit retain their reviewed state in future generations of the chronology.
Expanded Entries	Click the expand arrow next to any event description to reveal the full, detailed summary of what happened, with direct quotes from the source documents.

Controls and filters

Controls

Edit mode

Toggle between View mode and Edit mode. View mode is the default and allows you to sort and filter entries. In Edit mode, you can change the Date, Event Description, expanded Description, Importance and Case Impact.

You can also select the checkbox next to an entry to accept it. Entries that you edit or accept retain their reviewed state in future generations of the chronology. You can also delete entries that are not relevant. A deletion can be undone before you select Done.

Accept All

Select Accept All to accept all entries in the chronology at once.

Accepted entries

Click this to open a pop-out window showing all entries you have marked as accepted or that have been edited. This is a quick way to review your verified entries.

Filters

Use filters to narrow the chronology to the entries relevant to your review. You can apply multiple filters at the same time.

Search	Type a word or phrase to search within the event descriptions.
Document Type	Filter by the type of source document: imaging, medical record, consultation, surveillance, referral or report.
Importance	Show only High, Medium or Low importance entries.
Impact	Show only Positive, Negative or Neutral impact entries.
Date Range	Narrow the chronology to entries between two dates using the date pickers.

Matter AI Chat

At the bottom left of the screen, you can chat with MatterAI to help navigate and refine your chronology. When you ask a question, the chat expands into a full window.

You can ask questions about the chronology and MatterAI will help you navigate and refine the data. You can also prompt the AI to edit an entry, for example by changing its Importance or adding context to its description.

Export to Word or PDF

When the chronology is ready, export it to Word or PDF using the buttons in the top-right corner. The exported chronology is saved to the matter, including all your edits, deletions, and changes to Importance and Case Impact.

The export will reflect whichever view you have active when you click export.

If you have filters applied, the exported chronology will show only the filtered entries.
If you have sorted by a specific column, the export will maintain that order.
